Beattie Delivered for Gladstone: Zussino
The outgoing Premier, Peter Beattie, will be remembered as a major contributor to the economic prosperity of Gladstone and its people.
This frank assessment from the Chairman of the Gladstone Economic and Industry Development Board (GEIDB), Mr Leo Zussino, highlights the vital role played by Peter Beattie in the affairs of the region.
 “Peter Beattie actively supported the industrialization of Gladstone in a way that has ensured Gladstone will experience at least two decades of development and strong employment opportunities. He ensured that the economic infrastructure required to ensure the sustainable development of Gladstone into a modern 21st Century industrial city was provided”.
Mr Zussino highlighted the personal involvement and leadership of Mr Beattie in a number of key Gladstone initiatives, including:
  • A 10,000ha extension of the Gladstone State Development Area;
  • attracting the Rio Tinto Yarwun Alumina Refinery;
  • the promotion of Gladstone during overseas trade missions;
  • expansion of the R.G. Tanna Coal Terminal;
  • the construction of the port access road;
  • a firm stand against nuclear power in Gladstone;
  • the start of the Gladstone LNG industry;
  • the 2 year Gladstone Air Quality Study; and
  • active involvement in the facilitation of a range of new industries for our city.
“Peter Beattie supported industry but always insisted on development being balanced with the environment.  Without Peter Beattie’s personal interest and commitment, Gladstone’s development was destined to stall due to a lack of political will at a local level.” Mr Zussino said.
