Chinese Consul Visits Gladstone

26th August, 2005

Madam Liu Fei the Consul in the Consulate of the People’s Republic of China in Brisbane was farewelled from Gladstone Regional Airport today by Gladstone City Mayor Cr Peter Corones following her successful 2 day visit to the Gladstone Region to view industry development opportunities.

The visit was facilitated by the Queensland China Council; the State Development, Trade and Innovation Centre Gladstone; and the Gladstone Economic and Industry Development Board. Madam Liu was accompanied by Vice-Consul Mr Zhang Qing and the Honourable Tom Burns AO, Chairman, Queensland China Council.

Cr Corones was pleased to showcase the Gladstone Region to Madame Liu and further reinforce the Gladstone Region as the Global Location of Choice for minerals, resource processing and light metals industries.

Cr Corones said “We’re looking forward to long term relationships with China for both investment and friendship.”

“The Gladstone Region is the powerhouse of industry for both Queensland and Australia.”

“There are a range of future investment and friendship opportunities that Madam Liu and I are keen to explore,” he said.

Madam Liu was only recently appointed as Consul and it is significant that her visit to the Gladstone Region was her first to a regional industrial area in Queensland. The Consul’s visit included industry tours of Boyne Smelters Limited, the Port of Gladstone, Queensland Alumina Limited and Anglo Coal’s Dawson Mine operations.

The Gladstone Economic and Industry Development Board will continue to work proactively to secure long term industry investment opportunities with China.
