Current Significant Gladstone Region Projects top $6B

Recent local announcements have seen four project proposals totalling some $5.6 billion to be added to the region’s current expansions at the RG Tanna Coal Terminal ($400 million) and at Orica’s Yarwun Plant ($135M).

The four projects are:

Queensland Coke and Energy’s merchant coke and energy production joint venture with Stanwell Corporation, construction is costed at some $1.7 billion. Consultation on the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for this project has commenced with recent public workshops in Gladstone, Gracemere and Stanwell. A decision to proceed with the project is targeted for mid 2006 with the start of construction of the plant proposed for October 2006. The coke produced at Stanwell would be transported by rail to the Port of Gladstone for export to steel mills in Asia, Europe and the Americas. Gladstone Pacific Nickel’s proposed $2 billion plant targeted for construction in Gladstone to process ore transported by pipeline from Marlborough (70km north-west of Rockhampton) and imported from the south-west Pacific for the production of nickel and cobalt. The terms of reference for the preparation of an EIS for this project is currently being finalised with public and advisory agency input. Once the terms of reference for the project are finalised work on the EIS will continue in 2006. Information on the project is available at www.gladstonepacific.com.au  

Central Queensland Ports Authority and Queensland Rail’s proposed $1.8 billion Wiggins Island Coal Terminal development. The terms of reference for the preparation of an EIS for this project is currently being finalised with public and advisory agency input. The first stage of the project to export an additional 25 million tonnes of coal per annum is targeted to be operational by 2010. Information on the project is available at www.cqpa.com.au  

Central Queensland Ports Authority’s proposed $161 million Fisherman’s Landing Port expansion. The terms of reference for the preparation of an EIS for this project is currently being finalised with public and advisory agency input. The proposed project will add, over time, significant further wharfage capability within the Port of Gladstone’s western basin. Information on the project is available at www.cqpa.com.au
