GEIDB continues to play a key role developing the Gladstone Region

25th May, 2006

The Gladstone Economic & Industry Development Board (GEIDB) was established in 1999 by the Queensland Government to provide advice and direction in relation to the Gladstone Region’s ongoing development as a diverse, well planned, internationally competitive industrial centre supporting a well-balanced regional community.

Since its establishment, the GEIDB, working with The Coordinator-General and other State Government Departments, has played an important role in identifying strategic project opportunities for the region, liaising with potential investors, and interacting with key stakeholders to assist projects move towards commitment, construction and operation.

A focus for the GEIDB is the Queensland Government’s Gladstone State Development Area (GSDA), an area in excess of 21,000ha established to ensure that economic growth in the region will not be limited by the supply of appropriate industrial land. There are already a number of existing industries on the GSDA, including the Comalco Alumina Refinery, Orica Australia and Transpacific Industries.

The GEIDB continues to work with a number of other major industrial projects proposed for future location on the GSDA which are currently under investigation. Collectively, these projects will generate strong growth in the Gladstone/Calliope area.

Dr Ken King is the current GEIDB Chief Executive. Dr King’s successful three year term will be completed in late July 2006 when he will return to a substantive position within the Queensland Government. Advertising for a replacement for Dr King recently commenced through The Coordinator-General.

Mr Leo Zussino, GEIDB Chairman, congratulated Dr King on his work with the GEIDB over the last three years and wished him well for the future.

“There is no doubt that the Gladstone Region will see a series of new major industries established over the next two decades to the benefit of job and wealth creation within the community,” he said.

“Dr King has made a substantial contribution to the development of the GEIDB and to the vital role played by the organisation working in cooperation with the Queensland Government for the development of the Gladstone Region as an industrial powerhouse of the Queensland economy,” Mr Zussino said.

“The Gladstone Region currently generates some 27% of Queensland’s total volume exports valued at over $5 billion.”

“This trade will grow and the Gladstone Community benefit as the GEIDB continues to play a key role in developing the Gladstone Region,” Mr Zussino said.
