7th September, 2005

On Wednesday 7 September 2005 delegates from the Sustainable Economic Growth for Regional Australia (SEGRA) Conference visited Gladstone to view industry and development in the region first hand.

The visit was organised by the Gladstone Economic and Industry Development Board to allow SEGRA 2005 delegates from all over Australia to understand local development drivers, showcase local industries and recognise the keys to sustainable industry growth and development.

The full day visit to the Gladstone Region was well subscribed with 25 delegates from a variety of locations around Australia including Latrobe City, Manningham City, Wodonga City and Gannawarra Shire in Victoria, Wollongong City in NSW and Burwood in Sydney keen to see the Gladstone Region.

The tour commenced in Yeppoon with delegates travelling to the Gladstone Region by bus. The delegates viewed the Gladstone State Development Area, the Port of Gladstone and major industries such as Cement Australia, Orica Australia, the Gladstone Power Station and Queensland Alumina Limited.

Specific visits to the Comalco Alumina Refinery at Yarwun, the Port of Gladstone, the CQU Gladstone Campus including the Processes Engineering and Light Metals (PELM) Centre and Centre for Environmental Management completed a showcase of the region.

Delegates were welcomed to the Gladstone Region by Mayors Cr Peter Corones and Cr George Creed at a formal luncheon with 59 attendees that was held at CQU. They then participated in the Gladstone Engineering Alliance’s Major Projects Conference where speakers from the Central Queensland Ports Authority, Boyne Smelters Limited and Orica Australia Ltd highlighted their industries and representatives from the Queensland Government Environmental Protection Agency focused on sustainable industry development in the Gladstone Region.

“This was a great opportunity to showcase the Gladstone Region as a well planned modern industrial location that is continuing to grow in harmony with the environment and the community,” GEIDB Chief Executive, Dr Ken King said.

“It is exciting that so many delegates from around Australia were able to view our growth and see our success first hand.

“With significant future investments in industry, infrastructure and port development expected in the Gladstone Region over the coming years our competitive advantages and sustainability present a huge opportunity for future growth,” Dr King said.
