1st August, 2006

Gladstone City Mayor Peter Corones was delighted that the delegates to the Gladstone Region from the World Technopolis Association (WTA) who visited this weekend had indicated they were keen to return next year.

As part of their visit Professor Deog-Seong Oh, WTA Secretary General and Professor Byung-Joo Kang, Chairman, WTA Advisory Council met with representatives from local government, industry and Central Queensland University.

Comalco Aluminium gave a breakfast briefing on sustainable development and introduced the delegates to the Comalco/Great Barrier Reef Future Reef Project which they saw first hand on Heron Island at the University of Queensland's world class research station.

Cr Corones and Dr Ken King, Chief Executive of the Gladstone Economic and Industry Development Board emphasised that the response from the delegates had been outstanding.

Dr King said "The delegates were enthusiastic about the Gladstone Region as a model showcase for industrial, community and environmental planning."

"We welcome the WTA's ongoing interest in the region and will work with the Secretariat to participate in their UNESCO-WTA initiative that focuses on sustainable regional development."

"This is a great opportunity for the Gladstone Region to become involved in a global project that will showcase the region to the world and provide substantial benefits to our planning process from global best practice input," Dr King said.

"The region's ongoing membership of the WTA ensures that government, academia, development agencies, research institutes and industry can pool their knowledge and link into mutually beneficial projects for a smarter future," he said.

Mayor Corones added that "Community and industry engagement within the region has lead to a number of best practice environmental and industry outcomes including effluent reuse, industry on-site environmental and technology improvements, waste recycling, air quality monitoring, tree revegetation, open space planning and community programs."

"We are proud to have had the opportunity to show the WTA delegates world class development in the Gladstone Region as a Smart Region in the Smart State of Queensland."

"We welcome the opportunity to share technology and science advances with our international colleagues and work towards smarter regional development and future planning." Cr Corones said.
